Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoTs) are devices connected to a network that can collect and exchange information using embedded sensors.  Technological advancements have created an abundant amount of devices that can be utilized by consumers, businesses, and organizations to collect data and conduct analysis for their everyday needs and industrial production.  The overall move towards innovation with unknown vulnerabilities has prompted multiple incidents highlighting security concerns and the need for best practices.  It is predicted that more than 24 billion IoT devices will be in use by year 2020; approximately four devices per person.  Businesses and organizations are set to invest $6 trillion over the next five years into IoT technology that best fulfills their strategies and mission statements.

The best way to combat businesses and organizations from falling victims to IoT vulnerabilities is to establish communication between the public/private sectors and law enforcement.  In this presentation, the audience will be informed about the various types of IoT vulnerabilities and recent examples of exploited vulnerabilities that affected CI/KR sectors.  The presentation emphasizes that producers and manufacturers of IoT devices need to take into account the necessary security protocols to protect consumers and businesses.  The ultimate goal is for consumers, businesses, and organizations to be aware of the vulnerabilities with IoT devices and to recognize the lack of proper security can result in production loss, decrease in profits, public safety concerns, and possibility of fatalities.
